What is the Ganga Aarti and why is it special?
The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is a daily ritual where priests, in choreographed unison, offer fire, incense and chants to the river goddess Ganga. With 108 brass lamps lighting the sky, conch shells echoing across the water and thousands of devotees floating diyas downstream — it is the single most cinematic spiritual experience in India.
What time does the Ganga Aarti start?
- Summer (Apr–Oct): ~7:00 PM
- Winter (Nov–Mar): ~6:00 PM
- Sawan & festivals: May start earlier and run longer
The ceremony lasts about 45 minutes. There is also a smaller, more intimate aarti at Assi Ghat — beautiful, less crowded, and great for a second evening.
How to get a first-row seat
From the ghats itself, the front row fills up by 4:30 PM in the winter and a packed crowd of 2,000+ stands behind you. The best uninterrupted view is from:
- Reserved front-row seating on the ghat (what Kashi Bliss arranges — ₹1,000 per person)
- A private boat parked in front of the ghats — peaceful, photogenic, also bookable with Kashi Bliss
- A rooftop or balcony of a riverside hotel — luxurious but you lose the up-close energy
What to wear and carry
- Modest clothing (covered shoulders, knees)
- A light shawl in winters
- A camera — but enjoy the first 10 minutes phone-free
- Small change for the diyas (₹20–₹50 each)
Combine with a sunrise boat ride next morning
The Ganga Aarti pairs beautifully with a sunrise Assi Ghat to Rajghat boating the next morning — same river, completely different mood. Ask us to bundle both in your Varanasi tour package.
